DESTINATION OF SARAWAK

Physically, Bintulu over the years has changed a lot. The new Bintulu is a premier, well-planned and environmentally attractive industrial town developed by the Bintulu Development Authority. Bintulu has a diverse cultural and religious background from a population of over 100,000 covering an area of about 12,500 square kilometers. Natural and luxuriant tropical rainforest is well conserved and preserved despite being a booming industrial centre brought about by the implementation of mammoth and multi billion ringgit industrial project.

Above all, being  a town geographically situated half-way between Kuching and Kota Kinabalu - both accessible by international air link - Bintulu is a central gateway to tourist spots like Bakun Resort, Niah Cave, Mulu National Park, Longan Bunut National Park, Lambir National Park, Sibuti Wildlife Sanctuary, Rejang Palagus, Belaga and the Bario Highland.

Furthermore, Bintulu is easily accessible by air and roads. The completion of the Pan-Borneo Highway has connected Bintulu by road to all the towns and places of interest in Sarawak.

 

PLACES OF INTEREST

 Taman Tumbina - A living Heritage

A zoological and botanical park gives a glimpse of the flora and fauna. Situated on a 12 hectare site at the Tanjong Batu Coastal Reserve about four kilometers from the towns centre, the park is no doubt a source of living heritage with educational and recreational values. Its setting on a hill top overlooking the South China Sea the Bintulu town is surely a sight to be hold and definitely not to be missed.

Feast your eyese with a first hand view of the States Official Bird, the Hornbill; the fearless Eagles; the renowned Orang Utan, "Tom & Siah" ; the flamingoes; the only tigers and lions in Borneo; crocodiles, pythons and many more, And stroll through the matured gardens and walk in aviary  along the way, Feel the freshness and cleanliness of the environment.


 


 
Taman Pertanian Sarawak
- An Agricultural Park

A 50 - hectare park located adjacent to the Sibiew Riuer about 15 minutes drive from Bintulu Town. Here, you can ogle over 20 types of wild plants, an array of orchids, 77 species of fruits, and flocks of sheep- just an experience to remember by. Snug yourself comfortably in the rustic charm of an all belian (ironwood) amphitheatre and experience walking along the hanging pedestrian bridge within apreserved and enriched tropical jungle. Other recreational features include playgrounds boating in man-made lakes, fishing and horse tiding.

 

Similajau National Park
- Nature & Adventure vonders Of Bintulu

Take a 20 minute drive along to coastal road from Bintulu Town and enter the Similajau National Park - once a remote and unknown place is now transformed into a tourist attraction in this energy town.Covering an area of more than 7,000 hectares, the park offers you one of the most beautiful and unspoiled golden beaches in the country and homto over 850 species of birds and 24 varieties of mammals. For overnighters, basic facilities such as chalets and hostel are available. A Forest Departments  information centre is there too to assist visitors.

 

Kampung Jepak - Fisherman Village

Take a Short ride in "Boat Tambang" (River Bus) and meet the fishermaen community at the nearby fishing village across the Kemena River. You will be surprised to see the traditional feature and lifestyle of the Bintulu Melanau such as fish drying, manufacturing of the renowned Bintulu "Belacan" (Shrimps Paste), "Cencaluk" (Salted Shrimps), and Sago processing are still very much alive. The sight will bring you back to the nostalgia of the oled Bintulu as a Fishing Village.

 

 

Pasar Utama & Pasar Tamu - A Market Place

Mingle and join locals doing their daily chores at the unique Pasar Utama and the nearby Pasar Tamu - with cone - shaped roofs reflecting " Bintulu Terendak ". (Headgear). Right in the hub of Bintulu Town, the Pasar Utama is both a wet and fish market under one roof. Not only that, you can savour the local delicacies such as "Mee Jawa" Rojak, Laksa and Cendol" and quench your thirst on the first floor's food stalls. A taste of local offerings can be found at the Pasar Tamu. From wild & jungle products to native "home-made" specialties - Pasar Tamu has them all.

 

Pasar Malam - A Nightly Affair

A bargain spree night market is just a walking distance from most of the hotels in town. This peculiar carnival - like scene is a nightly affair at the Medan Pasar malam, Taman Sri Dagang, Jalan Masjid, Bintulu. With 150 stalls, you can take a pick of the numerous cheap and affordable items like garment, toys, electrical goods and watches. Even food, drink, vegetables and wild products are all there.

 

 

Council Negeri Monument
- The Birth Place Of The Sarawak Legislative Council

A retrospective walk down memory lane. On this site, a centenary stone was erected in 1976 and further improved in 1987 with a clock tower and fountain to commemorate the centennial of Malaysia's  first and oldest state legislative assembly meeting when in September 1867, an inaugural gathering of five British officers and 16 local chiefs of various races was held there. This historical event was convened by Charles Brooke, the second white Raja of Sarawak.

 

Bintulu Mosque - An Architectural Wonder

A walk up to the mosque is truly a spiritual experience. A man-made cascading waterfall adorned by beautifully crafted fountains enhances the tranquility of the mosque. A structurally modern, uniquely - designed and yet maintaining its intrinsic spiritual values - the mosque proper is a reflection of what Bintulu truly is. Landscaped with beautiful plants and flowers to please the eyes, it was named "Masjid Assyakirin" or "Gratefulness to God".

 

 

Kuan Yin tong temple - A Splendid Temple

Another spiritual building is the Kuan Yin Tong Temple of Bintul. Situated at Kilometer 2, Jalan Iskandar you will be fascinated with the grand design of the temple - skillfully crafted with qualiti workmanship. the rock garden courtyard, man-made waterfall and dragon fencing are the peculiar features of this unique temple.

 

 

Bintulu Golf Course - Golfers Paradise

After a hard day's work, swing to your heart's content on the 18 hole international standard Bintulu golf course. The undulating terrain certainly poses a great challenge to golfers. And enjoy the breath taking view of the South China Sea from the hilltop club house while savouring local and continental dishes in the open air restaurant.

 

 

Industrial Look Out - The Nerve Centre Of Industries

You may tak a view of the nerve centre of industries in Bintulu - the worlds largest liquidified natural gas complex, the worlds first Middle Distillate Synthesis plant, the urea/ammonia plant, the power stations and the crude oil terminal as well as an overview of Sarawaks sole deep sea port - the Bintulu Port Harbour. All these places can be seen from one location on the hilltop "Industrial Look Out Tower" in Tg. Kidurong. At night, the lighting of the whole are gives the feeling as though you are watching the landing of an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO).

 

 

Batang Kemena - An Adventure to Native Lands

Cruise for four hours by speedboat or express boat along the Batang Kemena to reach Sebauh, Pandan, Labang and Tubau. Then take a 65 kilometers overland trip on timber tracks to another river system, the Rajang River, to reach Belaga. You will be fascinated by the natives - Ibans, Kenyahs, Kayans and Punans - in their natural settings. Longhouses, timber camps, mangrove trees an "Nipah" plams line up the river bank.

Bintulu's popularity as a business and tourist centre has led to the mushrooming of affordable and comfortable accommodation from the luxury of a thre - star hotel to the fundamentals.

 

 

Eating Out

Eating out is definitely Malaysia a growing trend. and not discounting what Bintulu has to offer. You can savour the sumptous local ethnic dishes of Malay, Chinese or Indian origins in our food outlets or night stalls. Or go for the usual continental cuisines at any of the popular hotels and restaurants. One good tip, try the "Umai" - raw fish marinated in lime, chillies and onions - a Melanau traditional delicacy. You can take a two kilometers drive to Pantai Ria stalls to enjoy the delicious food amidst the cooling sea breeze, an alternative to home cooking. Or alternatively, walk a few steps to the Pasar Utama Bintulu to have a glimpse of Bintulu Town as well as the Malay/Melanau Kampung across river while enjoying your meal.

 

 

Entartainment

Like many other developing towns in the country, Bintulu is not lacking in night life entertainment. Karaoke loungs, discotheques and laser disc centres are places to unwind after a hectic day.

 

 

Shopping

Bintulus' popular shopping centers can be found at Medan Sepadu, Taman Sri Dagang, BDA - Shahida Shopping Centre, Kemena Commercial Centre at Tg. Batu, Medan Jaya at Kidurong Road/Jalan Sultan Iskandar junction. Ngiu Kee departmental stores at Li Hua Plaza, Farley Mini Market at Medan Jaya, Bintulu Commercial Square, City Point and Sing Kwong Supermarket at Kemena Commercial Centre are the most popular shopping spots.

 

 

Handicraft

Although vast development projects are transforming the lives of the people of Bintulu, traditional arts continue to flourish - weavers, craftsmen and woodcarvers are still active using traditional methods and styles handed down through generations. "Pua Kumbu" bamboo baskets, melanau hats and beadworks, to name a few, are available in abudance at the handicraft outlets.
